Fern - Frieren Fanart
Here’s my latest fanart of Fern from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End! I wanted to capture her quiet strength and deep connection to nature, so I incorporated flowers and butterflies to reflect her gentle yet powerful spirit. It was such a joy to bring her character to life in my style—hope you enjoy it!
Sketching the idea
For the sketch of this artwork, I wanted to focus on creating depth by incorporating several layers in the background, allowing different elements to overlap.
This added a sense of movement and complexity, while also enhancing the natural atmosphere around Fern.
I also challenged myself by having her hold flowers in her hands, which allowed me to emphasize her connection to nature in a more personal way.
It was an exciting challenge to blend all these elements together to bring Fern’s strength and serenity to life!
Balancing the Linework
The next step was to color everything in, and that’s when I started noticing that with all the detailed linework, the black lines were becoming a bit too busy and overpowering.
While I wanted the lines to define the forms and add structure, they were starting to compete with the softer colors and elements like the flowers and butterflies.
It was a challenge, but I realized I needed to balance the contrast and give the colors more room to breathe, so I coloured the linework to make the overall composition flow more harmoniously.
Final Piece
This is the final artwork, with the black lines adjusted to match the color of the filling, giving the piece a more cohesive and softer feel.
I really love how this approach brought everything together, and from now on, I plan to incorporate this method right from the beginning of my artworks.
It’s something I’ve learned through this piece, and I’m excited to experiment with it more.
Next time, I also want to focus on line strength—having the background lines be thinner will help create more depth and allow the main elements to stand out more clearly. It’s all about refining the details and pushing my style further!
